The origin of Loup Garou

James GreyWolf was born to Joseph ManyCoup and Janet Talbot. He was their only child.

Janet Talbot was a cultural anthropologist who was attempting to study the Flathead Indians on their reservation in Western Montana on the shores of Poison Lake. While studying this handsome peaceful tribe two important events occurred, she fell in love with and married Joseph ManyCoup -- and she was mauled by a werewolf.

Joseph -- a powerful medicine man -- was attempting to rid his tribe of the horror which, during the previous two full moons, had killed twelve members of the tribe. He readied his magic, but Janet, being a firm disbeliever in the “supernatural,” got her grandfather’s shotgun and prepared to face the wolf -- certainly this is a creature of the wild, werewolves don't exist.

When the beast arrived on the night of the full moon, Joseph was ready for it. But before he could use his medicine to destroy the creature, Janet stepped out and shot the beast. She wanted to prove to the tribe that this thing was natural; instead she was attacked by a creature that, by all rights, should have been killed by the two loads of 10 gauge double-ought buck shot that had just entered it’s body. Joseph’s medicine destroyed the creature. But not before Janet had received a series of vicious wounds, including tooth punctures.

One month later, Joseph, who suspected -- correctly -- that his wife had contracted the disease, wrapped Janet in gentle, but binding, magic and watched as his loving wife turned into a raging, fuming monster. After that night, the two spent every full moon together. One wrything in physical agony; the other, in mental anguish. In 1964, they had a child. He was normal in all respects, save one. He had inherited his mother’s disease.

Janet Talbot committed suicide three days after the baby’s first full moon. She left no note -- none was necessary. Joseph raised James GreyWolf all by himself.

As James grew older, Joseph noticed that the creature that the boy became and the father bound in magic was not the same snarling uncontrollable beast that Janet was. With time, the boy became more and more adept at controlling the beast.

He no longer changed on the night of the full moon. Instead, he became the creature at will and controlled its every move.

When he realized the power his son commanded, Joseph ManyCoup, afraid that the boy might abuse the power, made James promise to remain in his human form -- permanently.

James agreed, although at thirteen he didn’t quite understand his father's wishes.

James grew up a strong, intelligent, healthy boy. He never contracted any of the standard childhood diseases. What bones he broke knitted quickly. Neither he nor his father were aware of it, but the bacteria in his body which caused his strange affliction also heightened his immune system to the point that it could defeat any intrusion quickly and effectively.

During this time, Joseph also became aware of his son’s lack of the talent necessary to follow him into the realm of medicine magic. To give James the chance to find his own realm, he had his son study in the white man’s schools so that James could live in a world destined to be completely controlled by the white man.

James graduated high school and went to college to study theater but decided that there wasn’t much call for Indian actors -- especially shy Indian actors. He changed his major to psychology, his mother’s suicide still simmering in his subconscious.

One semester before he was to graduate, James was called to his father's death bed.

GreyWolf, said the dying man, You have become a good, honest man. I no longer fear that you will abuse the power that the spirits have given you. I release your bond of abstinence from the form that you were born to control. Use the beast within you to help this world, it needs all the help it can get.

The man closed his eyes and said, Today is a good day to die. James took his father’s lifeless body out to the land of the spirits and placed him next to his mother. He could feel the two souls bind.

James quit college and moved to Midcity to get a job and fight crime.
